Voltage Optimization: Beyond the Hype. What’s the Real ROI of Voltage Optimization for Industrial and Commercial Enterprises?

Without resorting to exaggerated marketing claims, this white paper suggests that demand-side voltage optimization via the latest generation of lower cost automatic voltage regulators may now offer a solid return on investment for many industrial and commercial enterprises.

The Weakness at the Heart of Data Center Power-Backup Systems: The Economic Case for Adding Electronic Voltage Regulation to the Standard UPS System Configuration.

The legacy design of UPS power-backup systems cost the average data center more than $130,000 in unnecessary utility charges annually. This white paper examines the risks of the legacy configuration and recommends consideration of an alternate system design that includes a modern electronic voltage regulator (EVR) as a standard component.

Quiet Generators, Happy Guests: The Economic Case for Adding Electronic Voltage Regulation to Backup Power Systems at Hotels, Resorts and Casinos.

Resort developers are increasingly building in places where power quality remains a significant challenge. Until very recently, in order to ensure that essential services could be maintained, engineers had to design backup power systems that would start the moment a power anomaly occurred. However, within the last decade an extremely reliable and low maintenance technology, automatic voltage regulators, also known as electronic voltage regulators (EVRs), have proven very effective at compensating for variations in incoming voltage.

The development of the automatic voltage regulator, or EVR, changes the formula for backup power system design.

Submit Power Data

Power Data Submission

  • UST engineers are standing by to analyze your power data and develop a full report on voltage sags and other voltage issues on your production line or at your facility. Your data will be treated as confidential, and only you and others with whom you share your credentials will have access to the final report.

  • Please submit your data in one of the formats listed below.

We may request additional information to better understand the data submitted. Contact us if you need help determining relevant data to submit or for recommended recording meter types.

  • Option 1

Best: Attach the direct/raw output file(s) from the meter or software used to record the power data.

Please submit an .odn, .fpqo, .dsd, or similar file type.

  • Option 2

Better: Attach an easily manipulatable export of the recorded data.

Please submit a .txt, .csv, .xls, or similar file type.

Be sure date/time stamps and voltage data are included in the file.

  • Option 3

Good: Attach a generated summary report from the meter, software, or third-party power quality assessment.

Submit a .doc, .pdf, .ppt, or similar file type.

Pictures or screen-captures of power quality issues may be useful as well.

  • In all cases, please indicate:

    • The meter model number used to record the data
    • The measurement location within the electrical system (e.g. Utility voltage ahead of step-down transformer, or at machine input connections)

This short video explains why modern electronic voltage regulators, like the UST MiniEVR™, should be specified instead of ferroresonant transformers in cases where the load is 2kVA or larger.

  • EVRs operate at up to 99% efficiency at all times, while ferros typically operate at efficiencies of only 75% to 80%, and frequently operate at efficiencies as low as 50% – wasting electricity and generating unnecessary carbon.
  • EVRs run silent and cool and can be installed indoors or out, while ferros are noisy and hot and must be installed in a protected indoor environment.
  • EVRs are specified to match the load exactly, while ferros must be oversized by a factor of 2x to 2.5x.
